Eight Green Flags for Medway’s parks… again
The same eight parks in Medway have been awarded a Green Flag, but what about the other 140?
With great fanfare, Medway Council announced that once again eight of its parks have been awarded a Green Flag, a highly sought-after award that is only given out by the Keep Britain Tidy charity to the best parks and green spaces across the country. Not only has this been broadcast in newspapers and on social media, but the Labour administration mentions it constantly as one of their biggest achievements.

The problem I have is that it was the same eight that won it last year, and the same eight that won it the year before that, and the same eight the year before that. In fact, you must go back to 2014, when Medway had a major increase in awards, when Gillingham Park and The Great Lines won their first. Then, once Ranscombe Farm got theirs in 2021, it’s been the same eight parks winning the awards off and on for the last five years. What about the other 140 urban parks in Medway? Why are they not good enough to join the ranks of the mighty eight?
