Promising, yet flawed

This month, Ben Hopkins concludes that Gills are promising yet flawed. This is at least a step up from last season’s status of being underwhelming and flawed.

I am the prediction king, I can predict anything

Last time, I predicted that the squad’s precarious balance between ability and experience would make for a topsy-turvy season. Recent weeks have proven that to be correct, but at least in our favour: a surprising, mostly last minute 3-0 battering of Bristol Rovers aided by what will probably be a cameo of the season with two goals in a seven minute appearance from Sheldon Kendall; a similarly surprising routine 2-0 versus Tranmere; and a triumphant 4-1 win away to Rotherham complete with a late penalty from returning hero Tom ‘EEEAAAVEEESSS!’ Eaves.

On the other hand, away defeats at York (0-3) and Accrington (1-3) underlined both that this team is a work-in-progress and that League Two isn’t a division in which anyone is immune to slip-ups. Meanwhile, dull home draws versus Newport (0-0) and Port Vale (1-1) saw ghosts of last season’s tedium haunt us once more.

I also cursed the well-being of new midfielder Eli King by praying for his continued fitness. Given I had previously cursed Liam Gordon by predicting an injury, I’m keeping my mouth shut about James Brophy.

And so Gillingham sit in 7th position, currently sneaking into the play-offs by goal difference. Definite progress, so far at least.

Goals!
